| The Oakland Public Library provides bookmobile service to patrons who, for one reason or another, are unable to visit the library and its fixed-site branches. Due to our limited scheduling time, the bookmobile cannot visit all areas or populations in the city of Oakland. We also cannot provide door-to-door service for members of the community. Therefore, the following criteria are used to select and retain bookmobile stops.
All bookmobile stops must:
1. Have a contact person and phone number for bookmobile staff
2. Have a parking space large enough to accommodate the bookmobile and allow for safe entrance and exit from the bookmobile
3. Fit fairly easily into our existing monthly schedule
4. Allow restroom facilities for bookmobile staff
Canceling Stops:
The Library reserves the right to cancel stops that exhibit a continuing trend of low attendance or low check out rates.
The Bookmobile focuses service delivery to four main areas:
20% of service to Community Stops
30% of service to Senior Citizens Housing
40% of service to Child Care Centers
10% of service to Rehabilitation Centers
Community Stops:
The bookmobile makes every effort to provide service to a wide variety of Oakland's neighborhoods and populations, especially those that exist a significant distance from the Main Library or its branches, and those that are geographically inaccessible. Preference is given to:
- Clusters of people with transportation limitations
- Clusters of people with disabilities, whether mental or physical
- Economically-disadvantaged areas
Senior Citizens Housing:
The bookmobile provides service to senior citizens' apartments and other senior housing developments, care homes, and recreation centers which seniors frequent.
Preference is given to:
- Senior facilities with larger populations
- Senior facilities located a significant distance from the Main Library and its branches
- Senior facilities that would benefit from a book collection that is largely in English
Child Care Centers:
The bookmobile provides service to preschools and day care centers within the city of Oakland. Due to the large number of public schools in Oakland (over 100), the Oakland Public Library cannot provide service to these institutions. Preference is given to:
- Child centers located a significant distance from the Main Library and its branches
- Child centers serving a larger population of children
Rehabilitation Centers:
The bookmobile serves adult and teen rehabilitation centers for drug and alcohol recovery. We also serve schools for developmentally disabled or emotionally disturbed youth. These populations are limited in their access to standard public services due to the nature of their prescribed treatment.
