Elmhurst Branch houses several Special Collections: the Black History Collection begun in 1974 contains unique and popular materials; the Religion Collection begun in 1981; the Young Adult Collection contains fiction, science fiction, and non-fiction titles specifically for young people; the Spanish Language Collection includes popular fiction and non-fiction. The Reference Collection is a general collection designed to meet the needs of the community. Elmhurst also has a popular children's section and Parenting Collection.

Branch History
The Elmhurst Branch Library is located in Southeast Oakland, near the San Leandro City border. The Elmhurst neighborhood of Oakland was first settled in 1820. Originally an autonomous country village, Elmhurst was annexed to the City of Oakland in 1911. A branch of the Oakland Public System was opened the same year in Elmhurst. The current branch on 88th Avenue was built in April of 1949.
HWY 880 heading south from downtown: take 98th Ave. exit. Follow 98th to International blvd. and make a left onto International Blvd., and a right onto 88th Ave.
HWY 880 heading north from Hayward: take the 98th Ave. exit (go to the right). Make a left onto International Blvd and a right onto 88th Ave.
HWY 580 East (From San Francisco): Take the 98th Ave/Golf Links Rd. exit follow 98th Ave. to International Blvd. Make a right on International Blvd. Make a right onto 88th Ave.
HWY 580 West (From Hayward): Take the 98th Ave. exit (go left on Golf Links) 1st light is 98th Ave. (go left). Follow 98th to International Blvd make a right and a right on 88th Ave.
By Bus:
AC Transit bus 1 and 1R via International Blvd.
