Branch History
The original Piedmont Avenue Branch was established in 1912 at 3975 Piedmont Avenue, near the present Wells Fargo Bank. In November of 1931, the Library Board sought approval from the City Council to enter into an agreement with S.M. Greenwood to build the present branch at 160 41st Street. Oakland architects Miller and Warnecke designed the building and the new library opened to the public on March 8, 1932. In the mid-70s, a savings and loan company gained ownership of the building and today the City of Oakland leases the branch from Citibank. Still in the same location, Piedmont Avenue Branch is one of the two smallest Oakland Public branch libraries and is the fourth busiest branch in the system.
