The Oakland Public Library seeks dedicated and talented Library Assistants who are enthusiastic about serving the citizens of the communities within the City of Oakland by delivering excellent customer service, upholding their public services commitment to our patrons, and by making a difference in the lives of library users. The library is currently recruiting for a Children’s Services/Book for Wider Horizons part-time Library Assistant.
The Temporary Part Time (TPT) Children’s Services/Books for Wider Horizons Library Assistant assists the Children’s Services Outreach librarian with clerical duties and at outreach events. In addition, she or he is responsible for organizing all day to day aspects of the Books for Wider Horizons Volunteer Storyreader program under the direction of the Outreach librarian, including:
• Recruiting and screening volunteers
• Organizing a multi-session fall training series, led by librarian presenters
• Volunteer placement and support, including visiting and communicating with Headstart and CDC sites.
• Maintaining a resource collection for volunteers at the Main Library
• Planning and implementing volunteer development workshops through the year, and a volunteer appreciation party.
The successful candidate will demonstrate skill in communication/customer service and organization, and an ability to work in an online environment. Previous experience supporting volunteers, working with preschool age children, working with partners organizations, and/or planning events are highly desirable.
Temporary Part Time (TPT) Library Assistants may perform duties which include checking in and out of materials, registering borrowers, answering simple reference questions, assisting patrons in the use of the library, as well as general library tasks in support of library operations. The salary range for this classification is $24.76 per hour to $30.39 per hour, plus a Health and Welfare increment of $1.71 in lieu of benefits. TPT employees do not receive benefits, and are limited to working 950 hours annually.

Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the Library Assistant classification, as noted below. Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable.
Job applicants must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Two years of full-time experience may be substituted for two years of college.
Experience is not required for interested candidates to apply.
Note: proficiency in Spanish, Cantonese and/or Mandarin is highly desirable.
