Summer Reading for kids runs from June 11-August 6th. Find out all about it at oaklandlibrary.org/summer.

Come to our city-wide Summer Reading Kickoff at the 81st Avenue Library, Friday June 10th from 1pm-3pm. Enjoy arts, Legos, and and Acrobatic show by Coventry & Koluza.  Each child in attendance will receive a free book to start their summer of reading.

Kids ages 0-14 who read at least 20 days during the summer will receive prizes including a book to keep, a "Super Reader" badge, coupons to Oakland attractions including Chabot Space and Science Center, Children's Fairyland, Fentons Creamery, and the Oakland Ice Center, and a chance in raffle drawings to even more.   Grand prize raffles include Lego sets, an annual family membership to Children's Fairyland (ages 0-4), and one iPad (ages 5-14).

Reading for fun, and reading something they have picked out themselves, are key to kids reading success.  Reading during the summer is especially important, to prevent "Summer Slide."  We encourage kids to read anything, anywhere, anytime; or listen as someone reads to them. It doesn't matter how long they read each day, but we suggest 15 minutes or more.

You can read to your child, baby, or toddler too. Just sign them up! Let your baby play with a book, read the same book over and over, skip over words and pages. Have fun. These are all good reading activities for babies and young children.

Stop by your branch for reading logs, or sign up on June 11th at oaklandlibrary.org/summer
