It's summer in Oakland. And you know what that means? Kids' Summer Reading at Oakland Public Library.

Sign up at our Summer page to register up for the Kids', Teen, or Adult Summer Program, or ask for help at any of our locations

Children under 5 and their caregivers have a different game to play; just ask at the library for a Pre-Reader Card.

After kids read for 20 days, they can come to the library to get a prize: a book to keep and a packet of coupons for Fentons ice cream, Round Table pizza, ice skating, Fairyland, and Chabot Space and Science Center. And you will be entered into our raffles. Raffle prizes come from lots of businesses around Oakland.  The grand prize for children 5-14 is an iPad.

So, what's happening this summer besides reading? Magicians, and bubbles; music and martial arts; animals and science experiments; puppets and acrobats; jugglers and hovercrafts; seed bombs and storytellers. Check our events page or go to your local branch to find programs happening near you. Don't forget that many of our branches are hosting free lunches for youth this summer.

Make sure to finish reading and record it online by August 5 to be included in the grand prize drawing.

Lots of cool things are going

Lots of cool things are going on. I have been to the Main Library and several branches this summer and I must say that kids are taking advantage of the programs being offered. The library's partnership with organizations and individuals to bring quality activities to the children is a great enrichment opportunity for our city's children. I have seen children busy at computers, looking through books and enjoying a safe, cool place to be. The summer lunch program is also a wonderful service to keep children nourished. A big round of applause for our Library.
