May is National Bike Month

Celebrate National Bike Month with the Library!

May is National Bike Month, one of our favorite times of the year at Oakland Public Library. Did you know that bike usage has tripled in Oakland since 2000? We are a leading metro area for bicycle commuting nationwide. In fact, 4% of all Oakland commuters traveling to work and school go by bike. In celebration, and to encourage even more Oaklanders to get out and ride, we have a full slate of bike-related events for you!

First things first: If you don't currently have a bike, the Library can help you get one! We're partnering with Cycles of Change to get more people on bikes - all you have to do is sign up at the West Oakland branch before May 21, and attend a safety training on May 27th at Oakland Upcycle. Ride away with a bike and helmet of your very own!

We want to make it easy for our patrons to visit us by bicycle. You can borrow a bike lock or pump at any library location. Our Tool Lending Library has bike repair kits and tools available.

Get your bike in working order - and add some personal flair - at our Fix & Decorate your Bicycle workshops at 81st Ave (every Friday from 2-4pm). Express your style with Scraper Bike Decorating at Brookfield on Wednesday May 18.

If you have spare parts (or bikes!), consider donating to our Bike Drive at the Main Library. The Drive is in conjuction with Cycles of Change, and lasts for the entire month of May.

New to cycling in the city? Get savvy at the Urban Cycling 101 workshop at Golden Gate on Saturday May 7, hosted by Bike East Bay.

If you've ever dreamt of starting a new career in the bike industry, do not miss Bicycle Career Day at 81st Ave. Get inspired by stories from a dozen local biking entrepreneurs who have created rewarding careers through their love of bicycles.

We're excited to host our first OPL Branch-to-Branch Bike Tour on Sunday, May 15. Join library staff on a family-friendly group ride and learn about the history of the Library! Details here.

Experience the wonder of kamishibai (paper theater) on Friday, May 27 at 6pm, when librarian Erica Siskind travels by bike to the Oakland Museum of California to deliver stories for all ages in the museum garden. She will present kamishibai stories for preschoolers on Wednesday May 18 at Temescal Branch and on June 16 at West Oakland Branch

Bike to Work Day is Thursday May 12! Fuel up at an Energizer Station at the 81st Ave or West Oakland Branches. We will also be at the morning celebration at City Hall, so after you load up on pancakes, stop by to say 'hi' and pick up a free book from the OPL Bike Library And don't miss bicycle storytime at Golden Gate on Thursday May 12 for books and songs about riding bikes.

Maybe you're a seasoned cyclist, and the pending summer has you dreaming of adventures and new places to shred. Learn about the vast network of bike trails in the East Bay Regional Park District on Thursday May 19 at Main. The following week, get inspiration from fellow cyclists at our Bike Route Show & Tell (Wednesday May 25) - and step up to the podium to share your own adventures.
