Nine DVDs coming soon to Oakland Public Library

It's February, and that means new DVDs are arriving at Oakland Public Library!  Here are 9 (nine) films I'd like to highlight this month.  Get ready to place your HOLDs!

The Imitation Game

From IMDB: Based on the real life story of legendary, gay cryptanalyst Alan Turing, the film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain's top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II.

Wild

From IMDB: With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthen, and ultimately heals her.

Rosewater

From IMDB: Based of a true story about a journalist who gets detained and brutally interrogated in prison for 118 days. The journalist Maziar Bahari was blindfolded and interrogated for 4 months in Evin prison in Iran, while the only distinguishable feature about his captor is the distinct smell of rosewater. An interview and sketch that Maziar did with a journalist on The Daily show was used as evidence that Maziar was a spy and in communication with the American government and the CIA.

Birdman

From IMDB: Riggan is a man struggling to make his mark in the world. Having achieved fame as "Birdman", he voluntarily walked away from the on screen role, and battled the inner voices that had him believe he was more powerful than anyone could imagine. Old, irrelevant, but still driven, Riggan has chosen to pursue his dream of honoring the man who inspired him over 20 years ago.

Interstellar

From IMDB: In the near future, Earth has been devastated by drought and famine, causing a scarcity in food and extreme changes in climate. When humanity is facing extinction, a mysterious rip in the space-time continuum is discovered, giving mankind the opportunity to widen its lifespan. A group of explorers must travel beyond our solar system in search of a planet that can sustain life. The crew of the Endurance are required to think bigger and go further than any human in history as they embark on an interstellar voyage into the unknown. Coop, the pilot of the Endurance, must decide between seeing his children again and the future of the human race.

Babadook

From IMDB: Amelia who lost her husband in a car crash on the way to the give birth to Samuel, their only child, struggles to cope with her fate as a single mom. Samuel's constant fear of monsters and his violent trantrums don't help, either, becasue they make Amelia's friends distance themselves. When things can not get any worse, they read a strange book that talks about the 'Babadook' monster that hides wherever it is dark in the house. Even Amelia seems to feel the effect of Babadook and desperately tries to destroy the book, but in vain! The nightmarish experiences the two encounter form the rest of the story.

The Interview

From IMDB: In the action-comedy The Interview, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show "Skylark Tonight." When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.

Top Five

From IMDB: A comedian (Chris Rock) tries to make it as a serious actor when his reality-TV star fiancée talks him into broadcasting their wedding on her TV show.

Boys

From IMDB: BOYS tells the story of Sieger, a sporty, rather quiet 15-year-old boy who discovers love during the summer holidays. Sieger is training in the new athletics team for the national relay championships and meets the intriguing and unpredictable Marc. The friendship that develops seems nothing out of the ordinary, but Sieger secretly harbors stronger feelings for Marc. He engages in a lonely struggle with himself when it emerges that Marc is also in love with him.
