Branch Schedule Change - All the Facts!

In order to increase the public's access to neighborhood library branches, OPL will be implementing a schedule change at the Brookfield, Eastmont, Golden Gate and Piedmont Avenue Branches.

As you may have heard by now, Oakland Public Library is changing the schedule at some of our locations beginning on Saturday, September 14th.  You can read the press release about it here, which gives a lot of the background information.  The short version is that we are implementing a schedule change at 4 of our branches, switching them to a Monday - Friday schedule in order to increase the public's access to neighborhood library branches.

The branches with a changing schedule are the following:

All other branches will keep their current Tuesday - Saturday schedules and the Main Library will continue to be open seven days a week.

I wanted to take some time to share answers to some questions that people might have.  If this doesn't answer your question, please feel free to leave a comment on this post and let me know and I'll do my best to get you an answer.

What is the nearest branch that will be open on Saturdays?

  • Brookfield - 81st Avenue Branch (1.6 miles), Elmhurst Branch (1.8 miles)
  • Eastmont - Martin Luther King Jr. Branch (.9 miles), Elmhurst Branch (1.6 miles), 81st Avenue Branch (1.7 miles)
  • Golden Gate - Temescal Branch (1.5 miles), West Oakland Branch (2.0 miles)
  • Piedmont Avenue - Rockridge Branch (1.0 miles), Temescal Branch (1.3 miles), Lakeview Branch (1.5 miles)

What will the weekly schedule look like at each branch?

Brookfield and Eastmont:

  • Monday - 11:30 - 7:00
  • Tuesday - 10:00 - 5:30
  • Wednesday - 10:00 - 5:30
  • Thursday - 10:00 - 5:30
  • Friday - 12:00 - 5:30
  • Saturday/Sunday - Closed

Golden Gate and Piedmont Avenue:

  • Monday - 12:30 - 8:00
  • Tuesday - 10:00 - 5:30
  • Wednesday - 10:00 - 5:30
  • Thursday - 10:00 - 5:30
  • Friday - 12:00 - 5:30
  • Saturday/Sunday - Closed

What is the cost of this change?  Will it save the city money?

There is no cost, or cost savings, involved in this schedule change.

What will happen with Saturday programs?

The locations selected for a change in schedule have minimal programs on Saturdays.  Any Saturday programs at those branches will be rescheduled on a case by case basis decided by the staff at each location.

Why did you select these branches?

These branches were selected in order to create geographic diversity of Monday service.  Other factors were also considered such as usage patterns at branches and issues specific to sites.

  • Brookfield - The Brookfield Branch is co-located with a Senior Center that has Monday-Friday public hours.
  • Eastmont - The Eastmont Branch is located inside of a mall, alongside a variety of other social services.  The mall itself is open Monday - Friday.
  • Golden Gate - The Golden Gate Branch's geographic location and active weekday usage relative to Saturday use was a deciding factor.
  • Piedmont Avenue - The Piedmont Avenue Branch is co-located with a school that is open Monday-Friday.

Can I change the pickup locations for books I have on hold?

Yes, as long as the books haven't already arrived at the previously selected branch location.  Call or visit any open library location for assistance in making the change.

I like the new hours. I've

I like the new hours. I've long felt having the same hours for all the branch libraries did not serve the community well. Many times I could not make it to my local branch, Golden Gate, on a Tuesday evening and wished that another nearby branch would be open on another evening. There were other times when I wanted to visit the library on a Monday and could not find a branch library open.

I realize that the Main branch has always been an option. However, it's far away from my home and parking is hard to find and costly.

I understand the need to

I understand the need to change the hours in order to provide service on Mondays. However, is it possible to change the schedule so that these branches are open Sunday-Friday, allowing at least one weekend day of service?

Please add a weekend day back

Please add a weekend day back into the schedule for Piedmont Ave. I understand the need of the school children, but consider this. There are five days a week for the children, and only two for the adults. Now you are making the adults drive to another branch when you want to promote the neighborhood community. Taking one week day afternoon when the school is closed and adding a Saturday morning sounds reasonable to me. Thanks!

Thanks for your comments. It

Thanks for your comments. It is nice to hear that this schedule change will have a positive impact on some patrons, as of course, that is the whole point! We will be checking in, so please do keep us posted on how it is working for you.

Unfortunately the budget does

Unfortunately the budget does not allow for 6 day a week service at our branches. Please do continue to provide feedback, as this is a pilot that will be evaluated after 6 months.

Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for your comment. I'll pass this feedback along to library administration. This pilot change will be evaluated in 6 months, and we'll see how it is going then, based on many things, including your feedback! Thanks.

Saturday is really the only

Saturday is really the only day that I can access Piedmont branch, and sometimes a few minutes before it closes on Tuesday. It is the closest branch, and I do not have a car. It certainly seems busy enough on Saturday every time I go there.

I think that you should

I think that you should stagger the branch's evening hours so that not all four of them are open late on the same day. Why not put two branches on a Monday evening schedule and the other two on a Tuesday evening schedule? This won't cost anything extra and patrons will have more options when it comes to evening library hours.

Not having any weekend hours

Not having any weekend hours is a real problem for people who commute to work and have kids whose schedules need to be tended to. That there are other branches only a mile or two away doesn't actually make up for it when the hours are so restrictive four out of five days a week.

I agree that a Sunday-Thursday schedule at these branches(which I assume is what Anonymous @ 2:42 intended to suggest) could be a good compromise for this.

Anyway, not trying to sound panicked or angry. I understand the reasoning behind the change, and I'm happy to try it out and see how it goes. Just expressing concerns.

Thanks, Anonymous (3:23PM).

Thanks, Anonymous (3:23PM). I will pass this suggestion on to the Administration. I know that the intent of Monday evenings was to, again, stagger and make more options available. All other branches will remain open on Tuesday evenings, so this allows some Monday evening coverage as well.

Thanks to everyone for your

Thanks to everyone for your comments and feedback. These will all be seen by administration. Please keep letting us know how this is working for you. It is a pilot program and the goal is, of course, to provide the best service to the most people, so we need to hear both how it is and isn't working, so appropriate adjustments can be made.

I love the Piedmont Library

I love the Piedmont Library and am sad to hear that it will not be open on Saturdays anymore. The new schedule is very prohibitive for those of us who work MOnday- Friday and can not get there during those time. Saturdays is the only day that I can get there, spend time and spend time with kids enjoying the library. Having this open one evening a week ( Monday) doesn't equal a lovely Saturday afternoon at the library! The library is a valuable community resource and should extend into Saturdays so that we can ALL use this. As a Saturday patron, I know from the crowds there that I am not alone.

Please reconsider this decision.

Wow, this doesn't increase my

Wow, this doesn't increase my access to my local branch library--it actually restricts it! I'm a public secondary school teacher and frequently use the Piedmont Avenue branch to check out books and videos I need for classes. My school doesn't have a library. Often, I need materials on short notice, and I'm not always able to get to the library in time after school. Thus, I'm a regular Saturday patron. I'm really sad about this change. It's going to make my life and my job harder.

I don't understand how

I don't understand how administration is framing this take-away as "best service to most people". Golden Gate was already open on Tuesday evenings.

Most people I know, including neighbors with children, primarily visit Golden Gate on Saturday. It's not as if we flit around to other branches at will, a weekend day at our local branch is a community builder. I walk to the library so because I work mon-fri with a long public transit commute, my access is now restricted to 90 minutes on a Monday night. Now that's its getting dark I won't even have that since we all know how easy it is to get mugged again.

The library is the only city service I can use. As a tax paying homeowner, I voted for measure D to improve library access for all. If working folk cannot access the resource what is the point? I am really sad and disappointed and will miss my primary connection to my neighborhood community.

I would change to a Sunday

I would change to a Sunday through Thursday schedule. This will accomplish two things: saves the library money because they are open less hours during the week and gives patrons more access to their libraries that they are paying for through their property taxes.

Who else is with me on this?

Please change your hours

Please change your hours back. While you state that the whole point of the change in hours is to increase access, you have accomplished the complete opposite. As someone who works 9 to 5, I now have a single two-hour window in which to visit the library. Please recognize that not all children who go to the library attend Piedmont Avenue school and therefore would have to go to the library during evening or weekend hours, which no longer exist. As a Piedmont resident, we pay for Oakland library services that have now been drastically restricted. After walking to the library today to find it closed, my two-year-old son was in tears when he found out he couldn't get any new library books.

I don't like the change of

I don't like the change of hours. I believe Monday is not as utilized as Saturday by patrons at the Golden Gate Library. Library neighbors and users tend to work during the week and have weekends off. Temescal is not convenient because of lack of parking and no direct bus route. Also the drop box gets so full when the library is closed over both days of the weekend. I fear the content towards to top of the drop box can be stolen by folks in the street. Please reconsider this change of hours and restore Saturday hours to Golden Gate.

Another reason I don't like

Another reason I don't like the change of hours that Monday has now become the day the library is open in the evening. It is the only day that Golden Gate library will have later hours. However, Mondays tend to be holiday days when the library usually closes. That means any programs in the evening will just not happen. I prefer the Tuesday later hours. I participated in the book club, but could only do it on Tuesdays. Now that activity is no longer accessible to me.

Any weekend day the library

Any weekend day the library is open would be better. There is no reason why the main library should be the only one open on Sunday - even then only in the afternoon. Please put back a weekend day for Golden Gate library. Don't make the triangle neighborhood residents drive to Temescal just to use the library. I am also up-set that there was no notice of the change prior to implementation - at least none in August that I saw.

This is frustrating to see

This is frustrating to see Piedmont Ave branch go to a weekday only schedule. The rationale given is ludicrous. The public library is a community service we pay taxes to support. This is NOT an exclusive service for the convenience of the Piedmont Ave School. They get their own funds for a school library.

Please get a weekend day back on the schedule. It is the only day my family can ever use the library and your new schedule deprives us of access to a service we need and are helping fund thru property taxes.

Why not just have the four

Why not just have the four branches stay open until 8 on both Monday and Tuesday, close on Friday and stay open Saturday?

Same amount of operating hours each week (37.5), but more access for patrons. Plus, library staff still get a weekend day to enjoy. Sounds like a win-win to me.

These are the hours that I was thinking of.

Monday: 12:30pm-8pm
Tuesday: 12:30pm-8pm
Wednesday: 10am-5:30pm
Thursday: 10am-5:30pm
Saturday: 10am-5:30pm

I think that it's great that

I think that it's great that the system is looking for new ways to make the library accessible to the greatest number of patrons. I would imagine that having the library co-located with the school and school hours is a definite plus. My feedback ties in with other's comments, that as a 8-6 working patron, I am unable to make any of the new times (Mondays are typically late days). My visits to the library are always on weekends, after strolling down Piedmont Avenue. I know that we all can't have everything, but I would greatly encourage you to consider adding back in at least some time on a weekend day.

Thank you,
Leah

Seriously, change to the

Seriously, change to the hours that I suggested on Tuesday, 9/24/2013 at 8:21pm. You will make many people happy - trust me on this.

Closing on weekends means

Closing on weekends means that people who commute can't use the library. Their kids can't use it either if they are in school or other activities. I see many people here feel the same way. Please listen and give our community back a weekend day.

Are you still looking at

Are you still looking at these comments? We've checked and the Piedmont Avenue Elementary school is NOT using the Piedmont Ave branch on Mondays. In fact, barely anyone is. You already had late hours on Thursdays (which were great and much used) and Saturdays were extremely busy. Mondays are dead and are often holidays anyway.

Being told that I can "just drive" to another branch does my children no good: they do not drive. Are you saying that young and older teens should walk a few miles to go the library and that's just fine?
