We need diverse books. This isn't news, except lately it seems to have become news, with articles all over the place, including the New York Times. Our very own Nina Lindsay even went on Forum to discuss the topic and then continued the discussion in a blog post.
Some amazing people decided to turn this need into a national campaign to build some awareness, and from that came #WeNeedDiverseBooks. We knew we needed to take part. Check out our Pinterest page and find, down there at the bottom, booklists for children featuring books with a variety of diverse people.
Next we decided to ask our library staff and users why they think we need diverse books, and the results were amazing!
You can see one of our photos on BuzzFeed and a bunch on Book Riot! We were so pleased to be part of such an important conversation and we hope you want to be part of it too.
Please join the campaign. It's easy! Start by taking the Birthday Party Pledge. Support diversity in literature and make change in the world!
- I promise to give multicultural books as gifts to the children in my life for ONE year.
- I promise to encourage them to read about and appreciate diversity in all its forms.
- I commit myself to building a new generation of readers!
