Library branches will be closed on Monday, January 20 for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The African American Museum & Library at Oakland (AAMLO) will remain open regular business hours (10 AM - 5:30 PM) on January 20 for its annual film festival.
Children’s Book Author Breanna J McDaniel at AAMLO Saturday Children’s Story Hour
Breanna J. McDaniel will read and discuss “Hands Up,” her 2019 picture book illustrated by Shane W. Evans. “For many people,” notes McDaniel, “the phrase ‘hands up’ brings forward difficult emotions like anger, sadness, frustration. And fear.” However, the author continues, “With this story, I wanted to emphasize they ways I’ve experienced that phrase as part of my everyday life: at home, at play, in church, and at protests with young people leading the way.” Copies of “Hands Up” will be given away as door prizes to young visitors, and after the reading McDaniel will sign copies.
This special event is offered as part of AAMLO’s Saturday Children’s Story Hour. Travel across time and visit different parts of the world through the magic of reading. Our books acquaint us with people, places, and events, (both real and fictional) that shape our understanding of African Americans, others in the African diaspora, and peoples of the African continent.
