Chana was seven years-old in 1958 when her mother held a gun to her head and tried to commit suicide. The trigger jammed and she was taken to a mental hospital. Chana then became the caretaker for her depressed mother. It took many years for her to understand that her mother’s depression was due to her relationship with another married woman and the resulting psychiatric treatment she endured to try to cure her lesbianism. In Riding Fury Home, Chana Wilson captures the complex relationship between her and her mother.
