SEPTEMBER’S BOOK CLUB PICK:
QUARTET by C. Violet Eaton
Proceeding largely from the rural modernist inflections explored in his earlier work, C. Violet Eaton's QUARTET opens language out further, allowing other, wider influences to creep in: the poetics of dictation (Spicer, the surrealists, etc.), arthouse cinema & B-movies, pulp novels, early rock 'n' roll, literary decadence, and oral traditions. Themes include dissociated/disembodied voices, moral failure, crime, performance, desire, divination, possession, theatricality, money, and memory.
C. Violet Eaton is a poet living in Arkansas. His first full- length collection, Some Habits, was the winner of the 2013 Omnidawn Open Poetry Prize, selected by Forrest Gander. QUARTET is his second book.
Our book club moderator is Layla Forrest-White. She grew up in San Francisco, and has been in the East Bay since attending graduate school at UC Berkeley, where she received her PhD in Comparative Literature. Since graduation, she has worked in local organizations promoting access to education for underserved populations. In her spare time, she plays basketball, swims, and, of course, reads. Her favorite book is In Search of Lost Time, and she can't wait to read new books with new people.
