Chavez Branch has approximately 56,000 books, CDs, videos, DVDs, audio books, audiocassettes, and magazines and newspapers for all ages.

Our Spanish language collection is the largest of the system, with 18,500 circulating Spanish items. Also of popular interest is our Chicano reference and circulating collection. Chavez also has small Vietnamese and Chinese Adult collections.

The branch is equipped with sixteen (16) computers with Internet access for public use, and two (2) additional internet-only express stations.

Chavez Branch also has a Seed Lending Library. The Cesar Chavez Seed Library is a free urban seed project committed to increasing the capacity of our community to feed itself wholesome food by means of education that fosters community resilience, self-reliance and a culture of sharing. Anyone is welcome to come in and check-out seeds. No library card is needed, just sign-out for them. We then ask that you let some go to seed after planting them and return some of these next generation seeds for others to borrow. The best part is that there are no fines if you are unable to return the seeds!

Meeting Room

The meeting room has a capacity of 50 people. Tables, chairs, and a pull-down screen are available.

Memory Trace

Image of exhibit

Memory Trace is an intergenerational public art project that took place at the San Antonio/Fruitvale Senior Center between the spring and summer of 2014. In order to build a bridge between the generations the basis of the project was to have young people spend time at the Center and interview senior citizens. Working with students from ARISE High School and the Unity Council's Latino Men and Boys Group, Memory Trace compiled interviews that were transformed into a comic book. The exhibition consists of the comic book, original drawngs, paintings and stories gathered by the youth and seniors.

This event is supported by the Oakland City Council and funded by the City of Oakland's Cultural Funding Program.

Please join us for an opening reception on Tuesday September 30th at 5pm.
