About the West Oakland Branch

West Oakland Branch has approximately 35,000 books, compact disks, videos, DVDs, audio books, audiocassettes, and magazines and newspapers for all ages. Circulating materials are largely of popular interest with a strong emphasis on practical how-to topics and local history.

Special interest collections include the African American collection, a small business collection, careers and college section, a Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender collection, and Spanish language materials for children and adults. West Oakland has an extensive children's section focused on providing early literacy materials to children and their parents, as well as a growing teen collection.

The branch is equipped with six computers with Internet access available for public use, as well as adaptive technology, including screen readers and enlargers, for those who are blind or have low vision.

Meeting Room

The meeting room has 110 seats and a capacity of 189 people. The meeting room area includes collapsible tables and a large stage. The main room can be divided into three smaller rooms if desired. Limited kitchen facilities are available.

Power to the People!

Image of exhibit

The Free Huey Rally at DeFremery Park in West Oakland mobilized the Black community and featured a battery of speakers including Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, David Hilliard and Stokely Carmichael. These photos were taken in August, 1968 by Henry Raulston, who at the time was a member of the Oakland-based Association of Black Photographers.  Many of the pictures are being shown here for the first time.
