Oakland Public Library Is Presenting an Evening of Contemporary Russian Poetry
The Oakland Public Library is pleased to announce it will present an Evening of Contemporary Russian Poetry, with Tatyana Apraksina reading from her recent publication, California Psalms (Rodalarian Press, 2013). Ms. Apraksina will appear at the Main Library, 125 14th Street, Oakland, on Wednesday, December 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.
In the late 1990s, circumstances brought Ms. Apraksina, an established St. Petersburg artist and writer, to the United States, where she settled on the Big Sur Coast. In the natural isolation of this dramatic new environment, her cultural perspective required new forms of expression, and she responded with psalms. The poetry in California Psalms combines richly imagistic language with contemplative and emotional depth. The English translation, by James Manteith, conveys both the meaning and strikingly volatile sound of the Russian original. (Both the Russian and English are included in the published book.) Ms. Apraksina will recite from the original Russian and Mr. Manteith will provide English translations and song settings for the poems.
Ms. Apraksina’s original illustrations to California Psalms will be on display during this cultural evening. Books will be available for sale and signing.
