They teach mostly computer assembly & repair, and some computer use (Linux only, not Microsoft). They also donate computers to eligible individuals. Phone 841-3224. Provides information and demonstrations of primarily high-tech assistive technology. More than 100 California community colleges offer High Tech Center services for students with disabilities. Services generally include access software for students with physical disabilities, text magnification software for students with low-vision, screen reading software for students who are blind, access tools for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and a variety of reading, writing and basic skills software for students with learning disabilities. College of Alameda also provides instruction and access to cognitive retraining software for students with acquired brain injuries. Laney, Merritt, and College of Alameda have Centers. Anyone over 18 or a high school grad can take AT classes. The classes are ½ unit to 3 units. The student does not have to be in any other classes. $20 per unit. Each training is six months long and concludes in a one-month, off-site internship. The Center, owned and operated by the Blind for more than sixty-five years, offers one on one computer classes on adaptive technologies such as JAWS, WindowEyes, and Zoomtext.
