Read the Book, See the Film

Check out the many books that have recently been made into movies.

You may have seen any number of recent movie releases such as The Book Thief, How I Live Now, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, 12 Years a Slave, and Catching Fire, which are all based on books.  In 2014 many more popular books for adults and young adults will be made into film.  Here is a sampling of what to expect during the first half of the new year.

The wolf of Wall Street / Jordan Belfort
Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, this memoir reads like fiction.  Belfort rose to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life then entered a life of crime and corruption.  The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Margot Robbie. -Summarized from IMDB.
Movie released on December 25th.

August: Osage County / Tracy Letts|
This book explores the lives of the strong-willed Weston family women who are reunited when the patriarch of the family goes missing and family secrets are revealed.  The movie stars Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Dermot Mulroney.
Movie scheduled to release on January 10th. 

Labor Day : a novel / Joyce Maynard
The movie version of Maynard's novel, which tells the story of a depressed single mother and her thirteen-year-old son who invite a stranger into their lives, stars Kate Winslet and Josh Broslin. 
Movie scheduled to release on January 31st. 

The monuments men : Allied heroes, Nazi thieves, and the greatest treasure hunt in history / Robert M. Edsel ; with Bret Witter
A World War II platoon is assigned the task of rescuing art from Nazi thieves and returning it to the rightful owners.  Starring Matt Damon, George Clooney, Kate Blanchett, and Bill Murray.
Movie scheduled to release on February 7th.

Winter's tale / by Mark Helprin
A man attempts to rob a mansion in New York's Upper West Side and discovers a young, dying girl inside.  The movie stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Russell Crowe
Movie scheduled to release on February 14th.

Thérèse Raquin / Émile Zola ; translated with an introduction and notes by  Andrew Rothwell
The movie version of Zola's classic is titled In Secret and stars Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Felton and Jessica Lange.  Set in 1860s Paris, this is the story of  Therese Raquin, a sexually repressed young woman forced into a loveless marriage by her aunt.  When Therese gets involved in a torrid affair with her husband's friend, the two commit a crime which leads to tragic consequences.
Movie scheduled to release on February 21st.

Divergent / Veronica Roth
Based on Book 1 of Roth's Young Adult series, the movie stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet.  Beatrice Prior lives in a dystopian Chicago society in which  all sixteen-year-olds must choose to dedicate their lives to one of five different factions.  Each faction is dedicated to a particular virtue -- Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite.  Beatrice is forced to make a choice between remaining with her family and being true to herself. -Summarized from Publisher's Description.

Heaven is for real : a little boy's astounding story of his trip to heaven and back / Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent
This is the story of the four-year-old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven.  He survives and begins talking about his experience.  -Summarized from Publisher's Description.  Starring Greg Kinnear and Kelly Reilly.
Movie scheduled to realease April 16th.

The fault in our stars / John Green
In this young adult novel, sixteen-year-old Hazel, a stage IV thyroid cancer patient, has accepted her terminal diagnosis until a chance meeting with a boy at cancer support group forces her to reeaxime her perspective on love, loss, and life.  -From OPL Catalog Description. 
The movie stars Shailene Woodly, Ansel Elgort and Willem Dafoe.

Serena : a novel / Ron Rash
Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Rhys Infans star in this movie set in North Carolina in the 1930s at the beginning of the environmental movement.  George and Serena Pemberton are newlyweds who leave Boston for the mountains of North Carolina to tend to their developing timber empire.  When Serena learns she is unable to have children, the future of their empire and the son George fathered with another woman are put at risk. 
Movie scheduled to release in 2014.

The giver / Lois Lowry
This Newberry award winning book is usually found in the children's section but is also a popular read for adults interested in dystopian fiction.  The world in which Jonas lives is perfect.  Everything is under control, there is no war or fear of pain and there are no choices to be made.  Every person is assigned a role in the community.  When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver who holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life.  Now, it's time for Jonas to receive the truth.  -From Publisher's Description.  The movie stars Alexander Skarsg
