You've Got a Great App!

Looking for some awesome new apps? Here are some of my favorites!

As the holidays approach and people are gathering their piles of new devices, I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite apps with you!  Maybe you'll find something fun you didn't know about!

Some of these are library-specific, some are useful, if not library-specific, and some are just for fun!

Should we start library?  Ok, let's!  Of course I'm sure you already know about all of these, right?  Just in case, though:

  • Freegal - An app that allows you to stream and download music for free using your library card
  • Zinio - This app lets you read digital versions of the newest edition of many magazines, again for free using your library card
  • OverDrive - Using OverDrive, you can borrow e-books and downloadable audiobooks from the library.
  • Enki - More library e-books.  Yay!

If you want some help using these apps, you are in luck!  Several branches are offering programs in the new year to help you learn how to download all the free books, magazines and mp3s you could desire!  Check out the flyer (or our online event listsings) for details.

Here are some more of my newer favorites.  Maybe you'll want to give some of these a try!

  • Akinator the Genie - A game, like 20 questions, wherein the Genie can guess whatever person you are thinking of.  Amazing accuracy and lots of fun!  I just tested it with Siegried, of Siegried & Roy, and he got it!
  • Flipagram - Take your photos and make a short film using this app.  Great for posting to Instagram (or Facebook or Twitter).
  • - This is a fun way to check out what different glasses would look like on your face.
  • Grubhub - Hungry?  Find out what food you can have delivered, order it through the app, pay through the app (if you want) and it'll arrive at your door!
  • Houzz - A fun interior design app.  Great for inspiration!
  • Mother Goose on the Loose - This one is, sadly, only available on Apple products so far, but it is a great app allowing children to move "felt board" pieces and sing along with nursery rhymes.
  • Shazam - With the push of a giant button, this app can tell you what song is playing.  Great for when you hear something you love playing while you are out and about and have no way to figure out what it is!
  • Vivino - Wondering if that bottle of wine is any good?  Vivino knows!
  • Waze - GPS navigation with crowd-sourced traffic information.  A great way to get around town avoiding traffic incidents!

What are some of your favorites?  I'd love to put out another list in the New Year and include the ones you, our patrons, like and use most!
