The quilts in this exhibition document the partnership of Peralta and Hoover Elementary Schools with the Bay Area Community Services (BACS) Adult Day Care Center at The North Oakland Senior Center.
Working with artist in residence Ellen Oppenheimer, a fourth grade class at Hoover and a fifth grade class at Peralta worked in their classrooms and through field trips to the center to create these quilts that document the relationships that they developed with the seniors, all of whom have some form of dementia.
The unique bond that the students and elders establish during their interaction is extremely compelling for everyone involved. During their visits, the students lift the weight of the disease in so many ways. It is an incredible experience to watch the students and seniors interact and certainly worthy of being memorialized and promoted through artwork.
