Golden Gate and Piedmont Avenue Branch Libraries to Change to Tuesday–Saturday Schedules

Release Date

Mon, 08/18/2014

Oakland, CA – Effective November 1, 2014 days of service at two Oakland Public Library branches—Golden Gate and Piedmont Avenue—will change to Tuesday to Saturday.

The change is the result of a pilot program that began in September 2013 to offer library hours on Mondays in more areas of Oakland. Library Administration encouraged public feedback on the new schedules through an online and paper survey (April 15–May 31), comment cards, and community meetings. Administration’s evaluation of the community’s responses and data on library usage at the pilot branches led to the decision to end the trial Monday to Friday schedules at the Golden Gate and Piedmont Avenue branches.

Two additional branches that were part of the pilot will remain on the Monday to Friday schedule. Brookfield is co-located with a Senior Center that is also open Monday to Friday. Eastmont is located inside of a mall that is open Monday to Friday.

According to Gerry Garzón, Director of Library Services, the needs and usage patterns of each community were considered in the assessment.  “I appreciate the comments and feedback from thousands of residents who took the time let us know how they feel about the pilot schedules.”

All library locations and days of service are listed below, with changes effective November 1, 2014 indicated. Complete information about locations and hours at all branches and online services (available 24/7) may be found at
