This is a rare opportunity to drop in and see these talented young poets “behind the scenes” as they perform their work for the film crew. Come out to be inspired by this year’s talented group of Finalists and Oakland’s most innovative young writers.

Oakland Youth Poet Laureate Finalist Performances

This year's finalists for the Oakland Youth Poet Laureate will be performing, with their judges, at Pegasus Books on College. Come hear the talented, powerful, passionate voices building our future!


National Poetry Month Reading

Tuesday, April 23, 6 PM, Montclair Branch

Six local poets will be reading their poetry, followed by a short open mic period. The poets are Sheryl J. Bize Boutte, Grace Marie Grafton, John Rowe, Leticia Garcia Bradford, Gary Turchin and Tobey Kaplan. Sheryl Boutte will emcee the event.

Words of Resilience

Thursday, April 25, 6 PM, Main Library

An annual collaborative event between author/poet DeMareon Gipson and the Main Library of Oakland Public Library. The event showcases how poetry can be used as an act of self care. Featured poets include Donte Clark and MK Chavez.

Teen Poetry Contest

The top three vote receivers will get a gift card as a prize! Attend any of the poetry craft programs listed below, and enter your poem into our contest.  Library staff will help you! Your entries will go into an online photo album.  Younth poetsand Teen Advisory Board and Youth Leadership Council members will select their favorites of the entries. Enter the contest, and make poetry at the following library events for teens (ages 12-18).
