The Main Library to Reopen December 2 after Infrastructure Upgrades

Oakland Public Library's Main Library re-opens to the public

Oakland, CA – November 20, 2024

The Oakland Public Library is excited to announce the reopening of its Main Library, located at 125 14th Street, on December 2, 2024. The branch has been closed since May 27, 2024, for critical infrastructure upgrades to improve the library facilities and enhance the overall patron experience and workspaces for staff.

Upgrades Completed:

  • New roof installation
  • Electrical system modernization
  • New boiler control system
  • Heating and cooling improvements
  • Enhanced lighting, flooring, and ceiling upgrades throughout the building

Minimally invasive work, including skylight repairs, will be ongoing until 2025. These repairs should not affect services and operating hours.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the community back to the Main Branch after these essential upgrades,” said Library Director Jamie Turbak. "The improvements will create a more comfortable and enjoyable environment for all our visitors and staff.”

A special celebration is TBA that will feature tours of the newly renovated spaces, special programs, and family-friendly activities. All are welcome to attend.
