October 2025

Welcome to ominous October at the Oakland Public Library! It's officially spooky season and nothing terrifies a librarian quite like book bans! This month, we're excited to celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week. We also have some special Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos programs for you. There will also be more Hispanic Heritage Month events until October 15th.

Every month, we offer hundreds of free programs at our 17 locations, so here is just a quick snapshot of October at you library:

Banned Books Week

From October 5-10, we're celebrating the right to read with you! Find booklists for all ages, free community programs, and the American Library Association's data on book bans here

Halloween Parade

Friday, October 31, 2025
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Main Children's Room

March through the hallways of the Main Library in your ghoul-est Halloween costume! There will be plenty of candy. Also, check out our Halloween magic shows, teen zine making workshop, and other Halloween programs here.

Fruitvale History Project

Join us for a discussion about how activism changed the Fruitvale neighborhood. Learn how the Civil Rights and Chicano Movement sparked the creation of vital public service agencies such as Centro Legal de La Raza and the Spanish Speaking Citizen’s Foundation. Panelists will discuss their own contributions to this political movement that was playing out in the streets of the Fruitvale neighborhood.

This is apart of the Oakland History Center's 2025 Fall History Series (full schedule out now).

Teen Graphic Novel Book Club

Third Tuesdays
4:30 PM – 5:15 PM
Golden Gate Branch

So many exciting new book clubs are popping up at your library! This one is a great choice for teens who love comics or those who want books that are a little easier to finish reading in time for book club.

Needlework Circles

Crochet and knitting are increasingly popular hobbies. Why not work on your fiber art project in the company of others? You might make some new friends, learn new techniques, and find inspiration. Attend one of our crochet and knitting circles. (Available at various libraries on different days.)

Father Circle

Following the Fatherhood Summit with our partners at First 5 Alameda, we'd like to highlight the 81st Ave Branch's Father Circle as resource for fathers and father figures.
