So whether you're a new reader or committed manga lover, you can further explore the world of Japanese comics with a variety of resources that we’ve rounded up for you.
Manga Terms to Know – Manga Librarian Ashley Hawkins created a glossary of common terms to describe manga genres, audiences, and fandoms – perfect for readers new to manga.
Anime Planet – If you want to do a deep dive about a particular manga series, you can search on Anime Planet to learn more about the manga, including story description, number of volumes, anime adaptations, and suggestions for related series to try next.
VIZ Manga – American manga publisher VIZ Media releases free chapters online of the latest manga series simulpub with Japan, which means current ongoing manga in Japanese are also simultaneously published in English for the rest of the world to read. This can be a great way to read chapter-by-chapter without waiting for the full volume to be published, as well as sample new titles without committing.
No Flying No Tights – Written by teen librarians with their teen patrons in mind, No Flying No Tights reviews manga, as well as comics and graphic novels. You can browse reviews by genre, age recommendation, or book cover.
Anime Feminist – Anime Feminist publishes reviews, articles, and discussions on Japanese culture through a feminist lens. Their posts cover topics on LGBTQ+, gender equality, race and ethnicity, mental health, and disability and neurodivergence.
5 Stages of Post Anime Depression (And Recommendations to Cure It) – The end of a really great manga or anime series you've been obsessed with can come with a lot of feelings. Youtuber Inakyu offers some tips for acknowledging and processing those feelings from someone who's been there.
Link+ – Looking for a specific volume or series that doesn't seem to be at Oakland Public Library? Try searching for it in the Link+ Catalog, which gives you free access to millions of books from over 60 libraries in California. All you need is your Oakland Public Library to place a hold and the manga will be delivered to your local branch, usually within a week!
