Oakland, CA – November 24, 2025
Just in time for the busy Thanksgiving travel rush, Oakland Public Library (OPL) is teaming up with the Oakland San Francisco Bay Area Airport to bring free reading resources to travelers. Beginning Monday, November 24, digital ads will appear on 30 screens throughout the airport, encouraging passengers to enjoy ebooks, audiobooks and digital magazines through the Libby app courtesy of OPL—no library card required.
Whether headed out of town or arriving in Oakland, all airport visitors can instantly tap into a curated collection of popular titles. While residents can take advantage of unlimited access with their library card, non-residents can enjoy a free 7-day digital pass.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport and excited that it will be so easy for travelers to read on the go,” said Jamie Turbak, library director of Oakland Public Library. “This initiative ensures that everyone whether from Oakland or across the globe has something great to read during their travels. For Oaklanders, I hope this also inspires a trip to a branch to check out a physical copy of a book or attend one of our upcoming events. And for our visitors, we hope this experience encourages you to connect with your public library back home and sign-up for a library card to enjoy all the benefits including full access to the Libby app.”
Travelers can choose from thousands of ebooks, audiobooks and digital magazines for all ages and interests all together on one app. Downloading the Libby app is free and takes only minutes, allowing readers to start enjoying content even before take-off.
“We thank Oakland Public Library for providing this exciting new program that enhances the experience of travelers at OAK,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon. “We applaud this initiative to make free reading resources available for local residents and visitors alike.”
This service is compatible with all major computers and devices, iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ phones and tablets and Chromebook™. Through Libby, readers can also “send to Kindle®” (US only). All titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period and there are no late fees. Readers can also download titles onto Libby for offline use.
