The Friends of the Oakland Public Library's mission is to advance the role of the OPL as a vital community resource. With funds raised through memberships, donations, and proceeds from our downtown Oakland bookstore, The Bookmark, the Friends of the OPL has provided grants to support our diverse Oakland library communities for almost 75 years.

Special Libraries

Dedicated to the discovery, preservation, interpretation, and sharing of historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in California and the West for present and future generations.

The Oakland History Center's mission is to collect, maintain and provide materials that tell the story of Oakland and the East Bay.

The Oakland Tool Lending Library has over 5,000 tools, from home improvement, remodeling and repairs, gardening and landscaping, seismic retrofit, and more.

The Little Town Library Initiative aims to improve low literacy rates among elementary-aged children in Oakland.
