Second Start Adult Literacy Program

We offer free and confidential literacy services for adults.

During the Main Library closure, Second Start staff can be reached at the Eastmont Branch: 510-615-5726

New and prospective students are seen by appointment only.

 

Second Start Learners

Second Start Adult Literacy and Learning serves adults 18 and older, as well as 16-17-year-olds not enrolled in high school who:

  • Speak and understand English well enough to communicate with staff and tutors
  • Are not in college or have previously attended without success
  • Need help with reading, writing, spelling, or math
  • Can meet with a tutor at least once a week for six months
  • Personally make the decision to join Second Start
  • * Complete an assessment to confirm Second Start is the right program for you.

*Assessments are done by appointment only.

Second Start Volunteer Tutors

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Speak English well enough to communicate with learners and staff
  • Successfully complete tutor training
  • possess excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills
  • Understand Second Start’s mission and work
  • Commit to meeting with a learner 3 hours per week for a minimum of six months
