5 Ways to Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of AAPI communities across the nation and right here in the Bay Area! At the Oakland Public Library, we’re proud to serve a vibrant and diverse AAPI population, and we invite you to join us in celebrating through engaging cultural programs, books, and other library resources. Here are five meaningful ways to recognize AAPI Heritage Month with us.

1) Bibimbap and Watermelon Kimchi Making Demo

Volcano Kimchi founder and "fermentress" Aruna Lee will demonstrate how to make watermelon kimchi and guide you through creating a delicious bibimbap. The program will conclude with a tasting of her signature kimchi.

2) Chinese Painting Workshop

Learn the basic principles and techniques to artful Chinese brushwork. Students will learn to paint seasonal flowers, bamboo, and small animals. Art supplies such as brushes, ink, colors, and paper will be provided. Space is limited so please register!

Let’s continue to uplift AAPI voices and stories—not just in May, but all year long!
