Welcome to fierce February at the Oakland Public Library! We're proud to celebrate Black History Month, Lunar New Year, and happy to indulge in the pretty pink holiday that is Valentine's Day. We offer *hundreds* of programs at our 17 locations every month, so here are the highlights:
Black History Month is PACKED with exciting library programs including:
- arts and crafts workshops
- Readers Are Leaders: Photography Exhibit + Reception
- Sign My Name to Freedom - documentary film screening
- Book Club (we're reading All About Love by bell hooks!)
- Meet the Author: Nicholas Louis Baham III
- speedfriending
- and you can catch up tabling at the Black Joy Parade
Celebrate Lunar New Year! Last month we posted about the paint brushing and crafts workshops happening at the Main Library's Lunar New Year celebration on the 8th. Well we're adding some exciting opportunities to meet authors Derek Kirk Kim, Jason Shiga, and illustrator Tony Bui at the Main Library TeenZone on February 8. There'll also be an enthusiastic lion dance at the Main Library's re-opening on February 22.
Main will also be putting on an open house on February 22 to celebrate all the new upgrades made to the building during six month closure. Details to come!
For Valentine's Day, you and the kids can do arts and crafts at your local library branch. For those who've been burned by love, there is a special annual Shrine of Broken Hearts exhibit coming up soon. You can submit to the exhibit!
And if you're feeling dysregulated, the 81st Ave Branch is hosting a somatic healing workshop series called Be Happy Now.
What are you most excited for this month?
