Many beliefs, traditions, and archetypes are based upon humans' understanding of the interaction between Light and Dark. They've been personified in many ways. What do you think? Does Light chase away Darkness? Does Dark envelop the Light and hold it warmly? Do the two dance together, rejoicing when they touch, or fight each other bitterly when they meet?
I've selected some picturebooks and nonfiction for younger readers (approximately Kindergarten-5th grade) that explore the opposition and intersection of light and dark in the natural world and through human intervention. Whether science or storytelling, these books are great to gather around as a family. Enjoy them during the cold winter, when everything from lengthening nights to solstice candles to groundhogs' shadows reminds us of our relationship with darkness and light.
